Post 25: Lasagna

It wasn’t long after they’d left for the mall that Adrian felt something was wrong. It was like all the warriors were acting odd, in their own way, towards her. Mendax held his breath when she came by as if he didn’t want to breathe the same air as her. Julius made jokes but she could tell the mirth didn’t quite reach his eyes, that and his riddles seemed down right depressing. Vectio, who’d spoken to her more over the last month than he had in the beginning was back to being silent. She didn’t know what was going on but she figured either it was her or they’d all ingested bad lasagna.

Pressing her hand to her own rumbling stomach, Adrian frowned out at the passing scenery. It all looked like a blur to her at the speed they were going.

“Hey, speedy, don’t you think we should slow down a little. To NOT want to draw attention to yourself you sure are good at attracting police.” Just as Tristan lightly tapped the break with his foot, a cop turned into their lane following behind them. “See! I didn’t even have to use my gift for that one!” She smiled genuinely over at him but he seemed to be reserved, turned away from her. Not speaking, Tristan nodded thanks in her direction and then went back to focusing on the road; at a much slower pace.

“Hey, I was thinking, maybe we can buy something for the house that isn’t so…old. You know, something new that you guys could remember me by.” That definitely got his attention.

“And where, exactly, do you think you’re going?” his voice came out gruff, suspicious.

“Oh, I just meant like when I leave.” She laughed, not quite recognizing the mischievous look on his face. “Chase and I aren’t going to want to stay with you forever! He could still be your brother and warrior but we are not going to want to live in the Safe House for the rest of our lives!” She spoke incredulously as if she couldn’t even believe he didn’t understand that.

“You don’t plan to go anytime soon, do you? I mean, you can’t leave today.” He put emphasis on the last word and kept his face forward. Behind him, Vectio and Julius sent feelers to each other. Tristan, who was transmitting their converse to Technik back at the safe house and Mendax who drove the second car, smirked softly. It was as if he was saying ‘Gotcha!’

“No…what…” Adrian turned almost her entire body in his direction, a sad pitying look covered her face. “Listen, Tristan, I don’t know exactly how they do things on Arinth but here on Earth when you want to marry someone you don’t stay in the Frat house. You move out, do your own thing. I mean, I know you will miss us but I’m sure Chase will come back for any missions you need him for. And Arinth! Don’t forget about her! She’s going to need someone feminine and soft around the house so of course I’ll be back. I’m sorry but none of you have a soft bone in your body!” She smiled again and laughed. “You can’t get rid of me that easily.” Tristan harrumphed as the voices of the other warriors in his head laughed, turning his transmitter off, he twitched uncomfortably in his seat.

“I see.”

“Yes, but like I said. We should get something to represent me. A nick-knack or something! I am special enough for that right?”

“Yes, Adrian. You are special enough for that. We all care about you. We all want you to be safe. Sure, you can have your knick knack.” Tristan had turned his face towards her and put emphasis on the all, representing all of the warriors. She grew silent under his look and turned to face the road.

What’s wrong with him, she thought to herself. Glancing back at the warriors who seemed to be riding toward the gallows Adrian huffed as she turned forward in her seat. Morning grumpiness must be a Dark Warrior gene they all share. She shook her head and decided to stay silent the rest of the trip.
